Requirements:

Skylake processor

512gb of storage (can be mixed SSD or HDD/SATA)

Run most minders games on Ultra

Run Linux

8GB RAM

15" screen

Have some cool cars I found in my area your time

Nab some sort of ASUS or Gigabyte from Amazon Warehouse. No warranty but crazy deals.

Why do your classes require a beefy processor and graphics card? Sarcasm?

They sell rebranded Sager/Clevos, some Gigabytes, and the like. Some nice specs but they back ordered me for something for something like 7 weeks. I don’t recommend them.

I also heard ther’s some German company that makes a godmachine gaming laptop

Hahaha. I’m an idiot. I interpreted “Eng” as “English” classes, rather than Engineering.

These. They’re heavy and not pretty but usually have solid cooling. Laptops are often made by other manufacturers and get rebranded for various companies.

You can get some solid laptopnik level reviews here.

I’d recommend 32 GB RAM if you can afford it, or at least 16. Also, a good graphics card with 2GB of video RAM, 4 if you can swing it.

I’m in IT and federal construction and engineering, this is easily the best bag for your buck system add in higher caliber memory (Corsair Vengeance PC3-12800) and either a PCIe or SATA m2 SSD and a standard 1tb mushkin SSD and you will be set for literally anything. The IPS display and 960GTx 4gb will be helpful as well.

If you’re doing graphics design/CAD they can’t be stopped. They have higher end cards for gaming specifically though.

In some areas yes. It depends on what you’re trying to do with it.

(Those areas... certain 3D rendering tasks and games that involve heavy randomization. They’re mostly like 80/90% as good as a similar spec GeForce for gaming.)

That won’t run games very well, though. You have to decide between gaming performance and compute performance.

Maybe find a used Razer Blade? Those are pretty good.

They’re really pretty but you can get more bang for your buck from other folks like Gigabyte in that class.

Let me just tell you running CAD software on a laptop screen sucks absolute donkey balls. I hope you at least bring your battlestation’s monitor with you. As for MATLAB, you can run that on pretty much anything, but FYI there’s a parallel processing plugin floating on the interwebs for much shorter run times, which is super helpful for anything using iterative methods

Have you considered MSi laptops? I own a GT72 2QE unit with a Broadwell i7 and a 980M. Runs pretty decent and I have my unit set up to run RAID 0 on 3 500GB m.2 SSDs.

It also has some beefy cooling capabilities and you can upgrade up to 32GB RAM. If memory serves me right, the Skylake units should be cheap enough for your budget.

May I ask why no Alienware?

Wirecutter reviews have been on point in my experience. Their recommendation is the:

ASUS ROG G752VT-DH72

All your requirements, plus IPS screen with GSYNC!

Get a Clevo.

I’ve got a 17.3" display, 32GB of RAM, GeForce GTX980M, i7 CPU, 2 m.SATA SSDs, 2 full sized SATA3 HDDs, there’s still a DVD slot that could be used for another HDD, fingerprint reader...

http://www.reflexnotebook.ca/ if you’re in Canada. If elsewhere, there’s other places that’ll build to your spec. I think a “

Sager NP9758 - Clevo P750DM”

would work.

Bonus: I dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04, each get their own mSATA SSD.

You really don’t need major specs on your computer to run Matlab/Simulink (unless you are running extremely complex, computationally-intensive simulations). It’s also easier to do it on a school computer, as they have all the additional toolboxes that do not come with a student edition of Matlab. Source: Mech. Eng. grad student who runs complex vehicle simulations on a daily basis that do require 32 GB RAM and a significant processor. Also, CAD on a laptop is generally terrible, unless you plan on having a 17" screen.
